What Do You Need to Get New License Plates in MA?
Did you know that Massachusetts was the first US state to issue license plates, way back in 1903? However, the vehicles and the paperwork behind them have only gotten more complicated since then. Getting new license plates, either for an existing car or a new purchase, requires several things. Today, we’re going to go over all the things you’ll need to get a new license plate in MA, from the paperwork you’ll need ahead of time to the auto insurance you’ll need to buy.
New Car or New to the State? First You Need to Register Your Vehicle
If you have a new car or are new to the state, you’ll need to take a trip to the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) – for out-of-staters, it’s the same as the DMV – and register your vehicle. You’ll need to bring four things:
- Application for Registration and Title: If your vehicle was newly purchased or gifted, you’ll need them to fill out the appropriate dealer or individual application forms as well.
- Proof of Insurance: Like with most states, Massachusetts requires your vehicle to be insured before it can be registered. We’ll talk more about insurance requirements below.
- Proof of Ownership: You’ll need your proof of ownership of the vehicle, such as the previous owner’s Certificate of Title or manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin.
- Registration Fees: You’ll need to bring the correct payment as well! Fees vary depending on the type of license plates you’ll be getting, but you can find the current fee schedule here.
If you’re new to the state, you’ll have 30 days to convert your out-of-state registration and re-title your vehicle, both of which can be done at the same time at the RMV.
